Brilliant. Just confirmed that we're gonna do the Route Napoleon and rip through the Alps in September! We'll be taking the Tenere's though because they're set up for the long haul tours. Can't wait ... this is one of my bucket list roads.

Well it's the route that Napoleon used when he made the big mistake of leaving Elba to have a pop at the allies at Waterloo. We're doing the 325km (squirrelly bit) run from Cannes to Grenoble. So that's a blast down through France ... do a bit a playing in the sun then a leisurely run back up through the Alps. Gonna take about nine days ~2,500km.

We've booked the train and most of the hotels ... all entered into the sat nav ... we're just over the 3,000km mark at the moment. This is gonna be awesome. I'm gonna swap my trail hoops for full on sticky road types so I can get on it more in the twisties. They may even wear better. These big trailes handle exceptionally well considering their height and weight. I'm really looking forward to this.

Planning on doing the Route des Grande Alpes from Thonon les Bains to Menton later on in the month. Time permitting I'll do the Route Napoleon on the way back home.
I'd be cautious about going for full on sticky tyres, be more inclined to go for sport/touring type.

I won't believe it until it has been officially denied.

Yes I've tempered my enthusiasm a tad and decided to use the Conti Road Attack 2's ... gonna give the old zip tie method a bash

Well time's up ... whatever didn't get done stays not done. The road trip commences at 05:00 tomorrow. All being well hope to be in Troyes for early evening. Weather looks good and migrant activity is hopefully less disruptive than of late. I hate this waiting bit ... just want to get on with it now. Clean the bike one more time ... get me some Forex and I'm good to go. Bring it on!

Sheesh! That's that's one heck of a set of hills that is! Three and a half thousand miles later ... can you actually get a butt transplant? So I can now tick off the Alps from my bucket list. Trouble is I want to go back and do it all over again. There are some amazing roads and at this time of the year foreign Johnny has gone home and left it empty for us to play with! Marvellous!

This is what I did it on ...

We went up a hill via the squiggly track in the background ...

Caught our breath on the flat bit on the top ...

Then blasted out the back door into this lot ... twenty miles out, 3000m down! Awesome.

Rode the Route Napoleon from Digne to Cannes in August and it was indeed great. Have a nice gopro clip to remind me of that.

The best riding experience was through the Guisane Valley and the Col du Galibier - certainly in my all-time top 10.

Great experience on these fantastic machines...

With these wonderful people....

Finished with a visit to the loyal British subjects that are my Great Great Grandfather and my Great Uncle who reside here...

Wonderful trip in every respect.

It truly is a great experience. Anyone thinking of doing it ... Go do it! Now. It's good for the soul and the sheer enormity of the mountain range with its ever changing views leaves a lasting impact. Plus if you like to go crazy on a bike on well kept roads it can almost not be beaten. I say almost as I know there are other fantastic places to play in the world. I've done some of them. It's just that this is now on my doorstep, so to speak, starts in modern civilised Europe, ascends subtly into the primeval ancient environment which is a massive mountain range and descends gently into the Tropicana which is the outlandish South of France ... Nice, Cannes, Monaco etc.

Here's a few more pics.

They're all off of Route Napoleon ... the last one is from my hotel in Grasse. It overlooks Cannes airport way in the distance.

OK a few more and then everyone's gonna be bored.

You don't wanna see my arty stuff where I take pics of windows and doors. Means something to me but I generally get the comment 'Duh? ... why the doors?'

Cheers Alex
